Outside entrance of H-Unit

Opening day of the "state of the art" death row facility.  Acclaimed for its safety, in part due to being underground, H-Unit is, according to a   report by Amnesty International, a cruel and inhumane facility in which to imprison people.  The prisoners receive no natural light or fresh air into the cells they are confined for 23 hours a day.  Cruel and unusual punishment is a violation of Constitutional rights.  The men on this unit are sentenced to the "punishment" of death, not to cruel and inhumane punishment, until they are executed by the state (which is the ultimate in cruel and inhumane punishments). Opening day played out as a celebration by the Department of Corrections.  Before putting the prisoners inside, DOC had a party day.  Notice the band brought in to play during the day.  People were allowed to view the "underground" facility and even given the "opportunity" to pay to sleep in one of the cells over night.

The photo above shows the entrance from the front of H-Unit.  Shows guard tower in the middle and the two quads on either side of the prison.  The festive tent was only for the "grand opening."

The guard tower is shown in the upper right corner of the photo.  The  background reveals the top of a quad.  This indicates that cells are underground.  The entrance into  H-Unit is obscured by the red and white tent.

At left is a side-view photo of H-Unit.
