vigils

OCADP stands in vigil whenever the State of Oklahoma kills one of its citizens. Executions are typically held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. at the state prison in McAlester.

Our vigils are held outside the governor's mansion on 23rd Street, just east of the State Capitol (map).  We display signs opposing capital punishment from 4:30 until 5:30 pm, then stand in silent vigil from 5:30 until the time that death is confirmed (typically around 6 pm).

We invite everyone who is willing to behave in a nonviolent and non-confrontational manner, and who wishes to bear witness to state-sponsored killing, to take part in the vigils.  For more information see our execution alert page, phone us at 405.427.1111, or email us.

PLACES OF WORSHIP:  If you have a church bell, please consider tolling your bell(s) at the time of execution. Email us for more information.

clemency

According to Oklahoma law, when someone is sentenced to death the Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board reviews his/her case and makes a recommendation to the governor for or against clemency. The governor then decides whether or not to grant clemency. A clemency review is not a re-working of a trial, but rather a forum to consider whether mercy should be granted.

One of the things any citizen can do is write letters to the Pardon & Parole Board and the governor in favor of clemency.

Both the governor and the P&P Board accept email and phone calls as well.

Click here for information on the pending executions, sample letters and address information.
